Summer Intern Spotlight – Piper Anderson

RLF offers a competitive internship program every summer and semester that teaches aspiring PR professionals the skills necessary to succeed in a career in strategic communications. From writing news releases and pitching reporters to compiling media lists and drafting social media posts, our interns do it all. This summer, we welcome Jenna Barone and Piper Anderson. Our second intern spotlight is on Piper.

“I was born in Long Beach, California, and moved to North Carolina in 2006. I love both coasts; the wild beauty of the Pacific is just as much a part of me as the peaceful waters of Lake Norman. I adore food, reading, clothes, and expressing my creative side– whether that be through making a poster in Photoshop or writing a short story. I attend UNC-Chapel Hill, where I major in English and minor in public relations and creative writing. As my specializations might indicate, I love writing, and plan on going into public relations or the magazine industry after graduation.”

What is your favorite part about working at RLF?

The people, the dogs, the office, the learning! My coworkers are all helpful, encouraging and friendly, and they’re teaching me great new skills– it’s exciting to come into the office and learn something new every day. RLF has really great clients, from a nonprofit that helps military children to a medical device company that specializes in technology to help visually-impaired people, and working with these organizations is very fulfilling. Also, the sweet dogs that hang out at RLF and the rustic contemporary workspace always brighten my day.

What are your favorite foods?

Tacos, cheese, pie. Not necessarily all at once, but I’m open to the possibility. Like any Californian, I’m a sucker for Mexican food. As a self-titled cheese connoisseur, I’m game for anything from melty queso dip to an elegant bûche de chèvre. And as someone with a well-documented sweet tooth, I have a natural affinity for pies. Is anything lovelier than a perfect crust? I love baking Our State Magazine’s Atlantic Beach Pie– it not only tastes like sunshine, but it’s soothing to make and always turns out so well I feel like a genuine pie prodigy.

What brings out your inner nerd?

I love Shakespeare! He’s a genius and I can’t get enough of his clever language. I’m notorious among friends for quoting passages from Hamlet or Macbeth when I’m feeling spunky.

What has been one of your favorite experiences?

I studied abroad in France for four months during the fall of my junior year at UNC. I’ve always been a bit obsessed with France– the language, the culture, the geography– so the experience fulfilled a dream I’d had since I was little. I lived in Reims, the center of the Champagne region. Between the travel and international friendships, I grew so much and had so many amazing adventures.
