The best way to learn many skills is not through a classroom or a lecture, but through hands-on experience. That’s why we feel it is so important that our interns get to the opportunity to try as many facets of life in a PR firm as possible, whether its helping to research costs for a new campaign idea, drafting news releases or participating in our social activities.
This spring, we have two interns working with us. This week, we introduce you to Wesley Gray Smith.
“I am a senior public relations and history major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I’m originally from Shelby, North Carolina. It’s a small town famous for bluegrass and delicious BBQ.”
What is your dream job?
I have always been interested in event planning and have promised multiple people that I will be their wedding planner one day! Though I’ve only been at RLF a few days, I love the PR agency environment. There is always something exciting happening!
If you could live in another country, where would you live?
Ireland. Absolutely.
I studied abroad in Dublin this summer and worked as a marketing intern at Flipdish. I fell in love with both the beautiful green countryside and the bustling city. Ireland is full of the nicest people in the world and some pretty cool pubs!
I actually wrote a blog about my travels called A Guinness a Day.
I can’t wait to go back!
What is your favorite song to sing in the shower?
I listen to Ben Rector radio on Pandora constantly, so that is probably what you would most likely catch me singing in the shower.
I am always singing…but that definitely does not mean it is good, so I should probably limit it to the shower more often.
Do you have any hidden talents?
This is a hard one…
I play the bass. People are usually surprised by the idea that I can play an instrument bigger than I am! My high school friends wouldn’t think this is a “hidden” talent but my friends in college don’t know!
What is your favorite thing to snack on?
Cheez It Grooves have my heart. If you haven’t tried them yet, you must!
What was the last concert you attended?
Going along with my “singing in the shower” answer above, my last concert was a Ben Rector concert in Raleigh. He’s even better in person!
What is something new you have recently tried or experienced?
My “senior year resolution” is to be more spontaneous, so I am trying to have as many exciting experiences as possible before I graduate. One recent example is that my best friend and I decided to drive to Charleston, South Carolina, for the night before classes started this semester.
Do you have any pets?
I have two wonderful dogs at home in Shelby. Nelli is a huge Gordon Setter and Lilly P is a tiny Maltese. The dogs in the RLF office make me miss mine even more!
If you could switch bodies with a celebrity for one day, who would it be and why?
I would love to spend a day in the life of James Corden. He’s the hilarious guy who has become famous for his Carpool Karaoke sketch on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” If you haven’t seen it, he drives around in a car with famous people jamming out to popular songs. I would love to ride around with Adele, Taylor Swift and Michelle Obama. Before riding around with James Corden, Michelle Obama had only been in a car once in the past eight years where she controlled the radio and was able to sing. It is so cool that he gets the chance to just be casual and have fun with these incredible people!
